In February 2022, Volvo announced that Torslanda, Sweden, plans to start building a new factory in 2023 and put it into operation in 2025. Volvo will introduce new and more sustainable technologies and manufacturing processes into its factories. This includes the introduction of a casting process for large aluminum body components.
According to relevant information, Volvo plans to carry out integrated rear floor production in its new factory, and will apply this part to a new fully electric platform around 2025. The first product will be announced later. At present, an aluminum alloy material without heat treatment has been developed to meet the new process. And the company is researching alloys containing recycled aluminum to promote sustainable development.
Volkswagen:
In May 2022, the Volkswagen Cassell die-casting plant successfully cast the rear floor of the vehicle body on a 4400 ton die-casting machine, laying the foundation for highly innovative platform components for the future SSP (Scalable System Platform) electric device platform. The R&D team successfully assembled this large casting (1.6 meters) in just 2 minutes × 1.5 meters) successfully cast with a locking force of 4400 tons. The future integrated casting replaced approximately 30 individual components, saving a total of 10 kilograms in weight. This technology is currently being tested for Volkswagen Trinity models, with SSP being used for the first time.
